The collar key itself is a stronger magnet that actually unlocks the flap allowing access by your pet but not by others'. This pet door is available in three colors--which is the only difference between the three model numbers. As the flap dimension is relatively large for a 'cat' sized door, the manufacturer feels it to be suitable for cats up to 15 lbs. You should make your own test.
